Johnson Corner Memorial, Hamstreet

Greenspace Gardeners were delighted when Orlestone Parish Council asked if we would like to maintain Johnsons Corner Memorial.

Situated at the junction of the A2070 on the left hand side as you leave Hamstreet – you can’t miss it, the American flag flaps on most days as the wind cuts across the marsh.

The memorial was created in the mid 90’s to honor a young American pilot who during WW11 bravely steered his damaged Boeing B-17G bomber away from Hamstreet village after his crew bailed out safely. Sadly Lieutenant William H. Johnson didn’t survive the crash.

You can read the full story here: https://www.orlestoneparish.co.uk/johnsons-corner/

You can park at the entrance and have a wander in, there are a couple of shady wooden benches next to the memorial. It’s quite peaceful considering it’s adjacent to the busy road.

Being a resident of Hamstreet, I feel an honor and a pleasure to work on this site.

You can usually find me there every couple Sunday mornings attending the area.
